Creativity

October 27, 2018

The rise of new media is one that has completely revolutionized the arts and entertainment industry. Coming with all the new technological advancements that allow people from all over the world to indulge in the globalization of ideas, it can be said without a shadow of a doubt that new media fosters creativity.

Now, the question then becomes: how so? Well, from the perspective of the original content creators, new media enables the mass dissemination of art, music, movies, etc. to the public which ensures that the artists, producers, directors, and those of the like are having the fruit of their blood, sweat, and tears through recognition and acknowledgment.  New media, in a sense, acts as the facilitator or middleman of the buyer and the seller; thus, the more opportunities made available for the buyers to buy, the more inspired the sellers will be to create to sell.

Branching away from the 'original creators,' new media also fosters creativity within, say, 'secondhand creators'. Perhaps a better way to phrase this would be: art inspires art. This can be seen via the mashups and parodies being created by original consumers who then upload their remodeled art onto content-sharing platforms like YouTube and become new creators. Guarded under the fair use doctrine within the copyright protection laws, since these edited clips do not explicitly violate intellectual property, you may be able to find "
YouTube videos that turn Bambi, Simba and Winnie the Pooh into rap stars [performing to] “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” by the rapper Soulja Boy." (Barnes, 1).

Disney is not the only company that is seemingly tolerant over these creative twists to their art, for Nickelodeon spokesperson Dan Martinsen also lauded mashups of Spongebob Squarepants which churned out a massive 7 million views and counting (Barnes, 1-2). Considering the fact that "Crank That" was the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 during its time and probably aided in further exposure of these Disney and Nickelodeon characters, this can be viewed as a sub-convergence within the arts and entertainment industry that encourages more fostering of creativity with all the new media technologies expediting this nurturing and fruitful environment.

Otherwise, more generally, new media technologies give users a platform (be it a social media site, game, etc.) to divulge into some form of self-expression that is unique and creative to themselves in various aspects and in conjunction to the parallels of the other 5 C's.
