Blog about Twitter

October 14, 2018

Pairing along with the evolution of technology and new media, educational discussions have interestingly followed in step with these advancements. Usually, it would be common to think that all teachers and professors would scold students and tell them to put their phones away—who would've known that students are now able to use their devices to become more engaged in 'classroom' discussions?

With respect to Twitter, these discussions are meant to be short and concise. Given the character limit per Tweet, one may find it best to keep things to-the-point; thus immediately creating a disparity between honing in on key points and having no particular restrictions (say, with other modes of discussion which will be further addressed). In comparison, BlackBoard discussions, like Twitter, allow students to be able to participate online, and for introverts and quieter students, these online discussions are true blessings as they are now able to participate and articulate their thoughts in tandem with the rest of the class, as opposed to keeping quiet during in-class conversations. Additionally, both BlackBoard discussions and in-class discussions notably create a more formal environment in which students tend to get straight to work. On the other hand, as Twitter is also a social media site, getting distracted would often occur and lead to probable procrastination.

Ultimately, as words through a screen can only speak so much, in retrospect, in-class discussions may have the comparative advantage in terms of understanding in the traditional sense, but for those who are timider and those who are extremely busy with work, online and hybrid classes can, in fact, cultivate great discussion via BlackBoard and Twitter.

  1. Hi William, I think Twitter would be most beneficial in aspects of school announcements such as closings or alerts. That way important information can be quickly read and received by a mass amount of people. However, classroom discussions are possibly beneficial since it gets everyone together to participate even if they do not have much to say.
